Survival tips for the bad days
Have you already left SA? What's YOUR survival tip?
Take time to explore your new home town, see some sights, have a celebratory dinner at a nice restaurant, join some clubs - doing normal things will make you feel more at home.
Look for all the good stuff in your new country - don't compare it to home. Be excited about it all.
Recognise up front that there will be bad days, have a cry and move on. Before we left, we made a list of all the things we would NOT miss - ie all the reasons we were leaving - because it's very easy to romanticise what you think you left when in fact it was probably gone years before you climbed on that plane.
Fight SAD: St John's Wort, a herbal medicine, is good for grey sky syndrome and mild depression. It's available all over. You can also buy lamps that emit the"right" light - use it in your living room as prescribed while watching TV.
Don't search out news about home or hang out with ex-pats only - meet Canadians and make new friends.
Try the local pasttimes - snowboarding, skiing, snowtubing - you'll soon feel more at home.
If all else fails, go and see what's really happening in SA on iafrica.com's news pages... all that crime will make you feel so pleased you left!
Join The Canada List and make friends before you land so that you have someone who understands the lows and can celebate the highs, too. And don't forget to watch out for our scheduled Canada Coffee Club Chats - chatting to others still going through the process will make you feel much better.
