If I ask for a status request, will it delay my application?
Someone published a message somewhere sometime which said that everytime we send in a status request, it delays the processing of our applications, because they have to pull the file each time.
As far as I can tell from my experience and letters from Buffalo (where I lodged), this is not so. In fact, I am convinced that, had I not made some of these requests, I would STILL be waiting for something to happen. Some requests appear to have made them aware of my plight enough to chase certain things up! And they always responded to my enquiries by mail, even though not always to my satisfaction.
Typically, when you ask for a status request, you will not get a response if everything is going according to plan. However, if they find there is a problem after checking the status of your file on their excellent database, they will write back to you by snailmail. They do not necessarily pull the physical file at all, so there is no delay. I usually fax these requests - in fact, Buffalo provides a form with which to make status checks.
The letter that came with the afore-mentioned form states that they will not respond to status requests if all is going according to the norm, which I suppose is great to know.
General enquiries - that is, nothing specific to your particular file - can sometimes be made by phoning the office where you lodged (eg Pretoria and Buffalo, but not London), but be prepared to listen to a lengthy taped message! Having said that, the staff at Buffalo were very helpful and often answered questions I thought they wouldn't after I'd given them my file number. It's worth a shot!
In Pretoria you have to leave a detailed message and they will call you back. I made 2 enquiries and both times they called me back the next day. I have not tried to make file-specific enquiries through Pretoria, but I know some people have been given fairly file-specific info and others not. I guess it depends who you get.
Having said all the above, I suppose if we inundate the offices with enquiries, their staff will have less time to spend on processing all our files... I leave you with that thought!
