Transformers
Transformers are available in Canada and are worth considering, alhough small appliances are typically not too expensive. My SA toaster somehow made it into our container and it works great on a transformer, even though it doesn't have the width to take bagels, essential in Canada!

White Goods (stoves, fridges, washers, etc)
Leave all the large white goods behind. It's really not worth bringing them and houses in Canada come with most large appliances (usually including a dishwasher).

TVs and VCRs
Generally, TVs and VCRs from SA will not function in Canada. You can however use them to view SA videos (eg your kids' favourite videos) if you use the necessary power converters. There are companies in Canada that will reformat your favourite videos (such as that wedding video) to the local format. You can also buy - at a price - video machines that play videos from SA and Canada. But these are pricy.

Computers
PCs will function on a transformer, and if they have an adjustable voltage switch. Some modems appear to work (eg in laptops), so test them before you discard them. Generally, look forward to connecting by cable or ADSL, which may require some spend when you get here, but are so well worth it, you'll wonder how you survived on dial-up! Even the dial-up is faster and more reliable here.

If you don't want to spend on internet fees when you land, go for AOL or similar - they give away web-time for free. But be warned - AOL is not everyone's favourite!

Cell phones
It's that whole tri-band, dual band thing. Generally, SA cell phones do not work here... but don't despair - you get so many deals here where the phone is free, that it's not worth bringing if you can sell it before you leave.

Small appliances (hairdryers, sewing machines, and so on)
Some small appliances manufactured outside of SA have switches to adapt to 110V. Check yours before you discard them, because this could be handy.

Sewing machines seem to work fine in Canada with the necessary power convertors. My mixer-muncher-shredder thingy works fine on a transformer!

For the rest, I found this web site a great help:
